Once a site has been fully search engine optimized, the next question is often how to tell if the efforts were effective. This is a largely subjective question, depending heavily on how much optimization was done, and how well it was carried out. It also depends on the site owner’s personal definition of success.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that SEO often takes a while to take effect. Results are rarely as immediate as we want; however, a little patience is usually all that’s required to see the fruits of your labor. At the very least, you have to wait long enough for web crawlers to view your site and rank it. Depending on which search engines you’re monitoring, this could take as long as a few days. Usually, though, it takes much less.

If your SEO is working, you should start noticing results within a couple of weeks or more. This doesn’t mean that you’ll suddenly have a flood of new traffic. However, you should see increases proportionate to your original traffic flow. his amount will start increasing gradually over time. The higher a page is ranked, the more traffic it gets, and the more traffic it gets, the higher it is ranked. Even if the difference is small initially, it should eventually change dramatically.

Another way to gauge SEO effectiveness is to see where traffic is coming from, and how many other sites link to yours. If both of these grow more numerous and diverse, then it’s a good sign the SEO is doing its job.

If you do not notice a change after several months, it’s possible that something was done incorrectly. If you’re confident you did things by the book (white-hat), you may want to alter your tactics with different keywords or by changing the format and content of your page. If you did the SEO yourself, hiring a professional might be a worthwhile investment.
